Delta State education official death investigation

Overview

The death of Unity Adeda, a Deputy Director in the Delta State Ministry of Secondary Education, has prompted both administrative and criminal investigations in Nigeria. The incident allegedly occurred following an altercation at the office of the Commissioner for Secondary Education, Dr. Kingsley Ashibogwu. While the Commissioner denied ordering an assault, the deceased’s family alleged he was brutally beaten.

In response to the unrest and an initial indefinite strike by the Nigeria Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress, the Delta State Government established an eight-member Administrative Panel of Inquiry. Organized labour suspended its strike following meetings with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

As the criminal investigation progressed, the Delta State Police Command detained Dr. Ashibogwu along with three other suspects. Authorities are continuing to search for two additional individuals, including the Director of Basic and Secondary Education, to assist with the investigation.
