DEM Party leader discusses new Turkish framework law

Tuncer Bakırhan, Co-Chair of the DEM Party, has commented on the recently passed 'framework law' in the Turkish Parliament, describing it as a historic step. He stated that for the first time in 120 years of parliamentary history, the Kurdish issue has been discussed on a legal basis. Bakırhan emphasized that the primary goal of the law is to remove weapons and violence from the equation, moving the Kurdish issue to a political platform for discussion and resolution.

Bakırhan also addressed the role of Kurds in the future of Syria, noting that the integration of the SDG allows Kurds to have a significant voice. He advocated for stronger legal and constitutional guarantees for mother-tongue education for Kurds in Syria.

In contrast, the Association of Military Opponents of Coups (ADAM-DER) expressed skepticism regarding the framework law. The organization criticized the legislation for failing to explicitly mention 'peace' or the 'Kurdish problem,' arguing that the text confines the issue strictly to a 'terrorism' context. ADAM-DER stated that the law lacks a binding legal framework for establishing peace and does not include proposals for democracy or solving the underlying issues, suggesting the current political climate may hinder meaningful negotiations.
