Dementia care support expands for families in Japan

Managing dementia care at home requires a combination of medical, social, and psychological support systems. Families are encouraged to utilize local resources such as Community General Support Centers (Chiiki Hokatsu Shien Center) to navigate medical visits, long-term care certification, and financial management.

In addition to institutional support, programs like the “Family Support Program” organized by the Aichi branch of the Association of People with Dementia and Their Families provide caregivers with a space to share experiences and learn coping mechanisms. These programs aim to reduce the psychological burden of caregiving by validating the emotional struggles of family members.

Technological solutions are also emerging to assist those unable to attend in-person meetings. The mobile application “Yorunimo,” developed by Theoria Technologies, uses AI to provide 24-hour emotional support and a platform for sharing practical caregiving tips. Experts emphasize that addressing the “nameless care”—the constant mental load of monitoring and adjusting to a patient's fluctuating condition—is essential for preventing caregiver burnout.
