Dementia prevention initiatives highlighted in Germany
In observance of World Alzheimer's Day on September 21, various initiatives in Germany are highlighting dementia prevention and awareness. The German Bridge Association (DBV) emphasizes that cognitive training through mental sports like bridge can mitigate dementia risks. Citing the French Paquid long-term study, the DBV notes that regular players of card or board games had a 15 percent lower risk of dementia. Additionally, research from Warsaw suggests that regular bridge play can slow mental decline in individuals with mild cognitive impairments.
In the Kaiserslautern region, the Dementia Network, in cooperation with the city and district, is hosting the 'Dementia Action Days' from September 11 to October 4, 2026. The program, themed ‘We are colorful in the head,’ includes workshops for caregivers and professionals on topics such as motivation and communication, as well as public information stands and cultural events like film screenings and community singing to reduce social stigma and provide support for those affected by the disease.
