Dementia risk can be significantly reduced through lifestyle changes

Scientia Professor Henry Brodaty, co-director of the Centre for Healthy Brain Ageing at the University of NSW, highlights that nearly half of dementia risk can be modified through lifestyle changes. Research suggests that two in five adults living beyond age 55 will develop the disease.

Key preventative measures include maintaining a Mediterranean-style diet, engaging in regular aerobic and strength training, and staying socially connected. Other critical factors involve managing blood pressure, cholesterol, obesity, and diabetes, as well as avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption. Additionally, protecting against head injuries, treating hearing loss early, and avoiding air pollution are recommended to build cognitive reserve and reduce long-term risk.
