WHO dementia guidance and Italy care initiatives

Overview
The July 2026 WHO update, a 168‑page revision, estimated that up to 45 % of dementia risk is linked to modifiable factors and called for physical activity, smoking cessation, balanced diet, social engagement, cardiovascular risk control and reduced air‑pollution exposure. The guidance warned against routine vitamin supplementation and reiterated that no cure exists.
In Italy, the programme of free residential apartments for Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s patients was expanded in May 2026 when Fondazione Roma opened six new units in Rome’s Villaggio, each named after a victim of the December 2025–January 2026 Le Constellation fire and unveiled with a mural. The same month, Tesorino pledged funding for community “Alzheimer Café” sessions in Montopoli in Val d’Arno and supported the upcoming Alzheimer Fest 2026. In June, the €15 million renovation of Fondazione Honegger’s senior‑care facilities in Albino was completed, raising energy class to A3/A4 and cutting emissions by more than 60 %. A legal‑guardianhip café in Carmagnola offered families guidance on administrative protection, while a school‑based dementia‑education project in Nonantola introduced fifth‑graders to memory loss through games and visits to a day‑care centre.
Subsequent WHO releases in July–August reinforced the same risk‑factor set and added specific calls to reduce indoor and ambient fine‑particulate pollution, to promote lifelong nutrition rich in leafy greens, berries, nuts and olive oil, and to maintain regular social contact, noting that eliminating social isolation could prevent about five percent of cases and delay onset by up to five years. The updated documents stress multidomain interventions across the life‑course as the most effective strategy for protecting cognitive health.
