Dementia care and caregiver support initiatives expand in Germany and Austria

Various initiatives and discussions across Germany and Austria are addressing the growing challenges of dementia care and caregiver support. At the 13th Congress of the German Alzheimer Society in Magdeburg, over 700 participants discussed the need for better political frameworks and social conditions to support those living with dementia and their families.

In Germany, discussions regarding 'Verhinderungspflege' (preventative care) highlight how the Federal Ministry of Health provides support for those with care levels 2 through 5 when primary caregivers are unavailable due to illness or vacation. Meanwhile, regional efforts in Kleve and through organizations like VITA care focus on networking services and providing community engagement to combat social isolation.

In Austria, awareness efforts are targeting the specific impact of dementia on women, who often serve as both patients and primary caregivers. Additionally, specialized training programs, such as micro-training sessions in Salzburg, are being implemented to provide practical guidance to home caregivers to prevent physical and mental exhaustion.
