Dementia support initiatives launch in the Netherlands and Belgium

New initiatives are being launched in the Netherlands and Belgium to support individuals living with dementia and their caregivers.

In the Dutch municipalities of Maassluis, Vlaardingen, and Schiedam, the DemenTalent program has commenced. This initiative focuses on identifying the remaining talents and interests of people with dementia, allowing them to participate in society as volunteers at businesses, sports clubs, or associations. The program is a collaboration involving Zorgkantoor DSW, Argos Zorggroep, KLiK Vrijwilligers, and local municipalities. The goal is to maintain the self-esteem and structure of those affected while providing relief to caregivers.

In Zwalm, Belgium, a new Dementia Family Group is set to begin in September 2026. This initiative, a partnership between Alzheimer Liga Vlaanderen and Huize Roborst, aims to provide a space for caregivers and relatives to meet, share experiences, and receive support. The group will meet every two months to discuss various themes related to dementia and caregiving, focusing on emotional support and reducing the isolation of caregivers.
