Demi Vollering wins women's world cycling title in Montreal
Demi Vollering claimed her first elite women's world road race title in Montreal, completing an exceptional season that included victories at the Tour de France Femmes and the Giro d’Italia Women. Following a 180-kilometer course, Vollering won a dramatic sprint against Poland's Katarzyna Niewiadoma, who finished second despite experiencing cramps in the final meters. Italy's Elisa Longo Borghini took the bronze.
The race was marked by significant tactical shifts and physical challenges. Vollering launched a solo attack 38.5 kilometers from the finish, but was eventually caught by the chasing group. She successfully navigated subsequent attacks from her rivals to secure the win. A major crash approximately 95 kilometers into the race disrupted the peloton, resulting in several high-profile withdrawals, including defending champion Magdeleine Vallieres and Swedish rider Caroline Andersson, who was hospitalized with a broken collarbone.
Following her victory, the UCI issued a sanction against Vollering for "using a non-compliant position or point of support on the bicycle." She was fined 1,000 Swiss francs, received a yellow card, and was docked 25 UCI ranking points. The penalty did not affect her world championship title or podium standing.
