Democratic Bulgaria party weighs leadership overhaul amid internal rivalry

The Democratic Bulgaria (DSB) party is confronting a leadership dispute as current chairman Atanas Atanasov put forward an unconventional offer to fellow party figure Radan Konev. Atanasov suggested that both he and Konev retire from the party's top post, arguing that they have become politically “amortized” and that new faces are needed.

At the same time, the party's internal proceedings have highlighted two other contenders: Yordan Ivanov, backed by the Plovdiv organization, and Bonka Vaseleva, supported by the Sofia branch. The DSB congress, which will decide the next chairman, is scheduled for 11 July. The debate reflects broader tensions within the party over its direction and leadership succession.

The discussion has drawn attention to the party's historic role on the right of Bulgaria's political spectrum and its previous internal power shifts, underscoring the significance of the upcoming leadership vote for the party's future strategy.
