Democratic Republic of Congo Ebola outbreak becomes second‑largest on record FAST-MOVING
The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surged to become the second‑largest ever recorded, with health authorities confirming 3,532 confirmed cases and 1,556 deaths as of 31 July 2026. The case‑fatality rate is about 44 percent.
The virus is the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or specific treatment exists. The World Health Organization’s Director‑General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the outbreak is outpacing the response, noting intense transmission in the Ituri province, the epicentre of the crisis. Active armed conflict in eastern DRC hampers response efforts and most deaths occur outside health facilities.
The Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has partnered with Singapore‑based Hilleman Laboratories, providing up to US$8.5 million to accelerate development of a vaccine against the Bundibugyo strain. The World Food Programme has appealed for US$293.6 million to address an acute food‑security crisis affecting 2.65 million people in the affected provinces. Uganda has declared the end of its own Ebola outbreak after four weeks without new cases.
