The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo was declared on 15 May 2026 and is caused by the Bundibugyo strain, for which no approved vaccine or treatment exists. As of 30 July 2026 the World Health Organization reported 3,605 laboratory‑confirmed cases and 1,587 deaths, a case‑fatality ratio of about 44 %. The epidemic has spread to five provinces – Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut‑Uélé and Tshopo – affecting 49 health zones, with Ituri accounting for roughly 88‑90 % of cases.

The WHO declared a public‑health emergency of international concern on 17 May 2026 and warned that insecurity, population displacement and cross‑border movement are hampering response efforts. Uganda announced the end of its own Bundibugyo outbreak on 28 July after 42 consecutive days without locally transmitted cases. In the DRC, Virunga National Park has set up six health checkpoints, deployed 40 paramedics and 80 rangers, and is supporting community‑level measures to contain the virus amid ongoing armed conflict and mistrust.

Health authorities stress that contact‑tracing remains below target, that the true number of infections may be higher than reported, and that additional funding and international support are urgently needed to scale up treatment, safe burials and surveillance.
