Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola outbreak exceeds 5,000 cases

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has reached record levels, with confirmed cases exceeding 5,000 and the death toll surpassing 2,378. This represents the largest outbreak in the country's history in terms of total infections, surpassing the scale of the 2014–2016 West African epidemic and the previous major outbreak in 2018–2020.

The epidemic is driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, for which there are currently no approved vaccines or specific medical treatments. The virus has spread to six provinces, complicating containment efforts. Factors hindering the response include weak health infrastructure, community resistance, and the high mobility of artisanal gold miners in regions like Ituri province.

While the World Health Organization has maintained the status of a global public health emergency, officials have clarified that no cases have been detected in Kinshasa. International efforts continue, with the WHO seeking additional funding to bolster response capacities and prevent further transmission to neighboring countries.
