Democratic Republic of the Congo battles Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak

An Ebola outbreak involving the Bundibugyo virus is spreading in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The epidemic is progressing exponentially, with more than 2,500 deaths reported to date.

To combat the spread, the Congolese government has requested vaccine doses from the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision. An initial delivery of 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine has been announced. Of these, 20,000 doses will be used in a Phase III clinical trial to evaluate the vaccine's effectiveness against the Bundibugyo strain, as its efficacy against this specific virus in humans has not yet been demonstrated. The remaining 50,000 doses are intended for healthcare workers and frontline responders.

The response faces significant challenges, including security issues where medical teams and NGOs are subject to attacks and looting by armed groups. Additionally, there are reports of logistical and financial difficulties, including unpaid medical staff and difficulties regarding strict burial protocols required to prevent transmission.
