Democratic Republic of the Congo begins Ebola vaccine trials

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing its deadliest Ebola epidemic to date, with over 3,639 deaths and 7,541 infections reported. In response, the World Health Organization (WHO) and Doctors Without Borders have launched a vaccination campaign to test the Ervebo vaccine. The study, expected to last between nine and 12 months, focuses on immunizing approximately 20,000 frontline health workers in the Ituri and North Kivu provinces.

While the Ervebo vaccine was specifically designed for the Zaire strain rather than the Bundibugyo strain currently driving the crisis, researchers hope it may provide a certain level of cross-protection.

Dr. Marie Roseline Belizaire, WHO Africa Emergency Director, emphasized that the response must involve local communities as full partners to address challenges such as misinformation, malnutrition, and lack of access to healthcare. She noted that community deaths often stem from systemic issues like unavailable ambulances or distant health centers, rather than just vaccine hesitancy.
