DRC receives Ebola vaccine doses amid rapid Bundibugyo outbreak

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is receiving a shipment of 70,000 Ervebo vaccine doses to combat a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus. An initial 16,250 doses have already arrived at N’djili International Airport in Kinshasa.

Of the total 70,000 doses authorized by the International Coordinating Group on Vaccine Provision, 20,000 are designated for a phase 3 clinical trial to evaluate efficacy against the Bundibugyo strain, while 50,000 are intended for healthcare workers and frontline responders. While Ervebo is approved for the Zaire species of Ebola, the World Health Organization noted that potential cross-protection against Bundibugyo exists but remains unproven.

The current outbreak has recorded 2,557 deaths and 5,375 confirmed cases across six provinces. Health officials warn that transmission has not yet peaked and could potentially triple. Containment efforts are complicated by armed conflict, attacks on medical facilities, and limited infrastructure. To protect the capital, Kinshasa, health teams have established checkpoints along the Congo River to screen travelers arriving via boat from high-risk regions.
