Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola outbreak exceeds 3,000 deaths

The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued an alert regarding unknown transmission chains of the Ebola virus in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus noted that many deaths are occurring within communities among individuals not previously identified as contacts, complicating surveillance efforts.

The epidemic has surpassed 6,000 cases and 3,000 deaths, spreading across 60 health zones in six provinces. To combat the crisis, the Congolese government has launched a new response plan titled ‘Une Santé’ (One Health). Led by Health Minister Samuel Roger Kamba, the strategy shifts focus from merely treating the sick to addressing broader environmental and social factors that facilitate viral spread.

The new plan emphasizes strengthened epidemiological surveillance, faster case detection, and improved community engagement to combat rumors and encourage reporting. It also seeks to integrate human and animal health sectors with environmental and administrative coordination. The WHO has called for increased international contributions to support a government response plan estimated at $1.3 billion for the next six months.
