Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola outbreak impacts children FAST-MOVING

An ongoing Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has resulted in more than 2,500 deaths. The epidemic is disproportionately affecting children, who face high mortality rates and significant social challenges.

According to the Africa CDC, the fatality rate for children under one year old is approximately two-thirds. For children aged one to four, the fatality rate is 58.5 percent, while the overall population fatality rate stands at 47.5 percent. Unicef estimates that children aged 0 to 17 represent about one-fifth of all confirmed infections.

Save the Children reports that at least 180 children have become full orphans in the 100 days since the outbreak was announced. Beyond the physical threat, these children face severe emotional trauma and social stigmatization. In some instances, children taken in by relatives face exclusion or are prevented from eating with other children due to fears surrounding the disease.
