The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo is expanding at an unprecedented rate, becoming the fastest-growing epidemic on record. As of late August 2026, the outbreak has reached 60 health zones across six provinces, with 5,794 confirmed cases and 2,786 deaths reported. The virus is identified as the rare Bundibugyo strain, for which no specifically approved vaccine exists.

In response, the DRC has begun a vaccination campaign using the Ervebo vaccine, which was originally designed for the Zaire strain. While its effectiveness against Bundibugyo is not fully proven, authorities are using it under compassionate use protocols. Approximately 70,000 doses are being distributed, with 50,000 intended for frontline healthcare workers and 20,000 designated for clinical trials to assess efficacy.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the humanitarian response is critically underfunded, with only 48 percent of the required $2.13 billion secured. He appealed for an additional $1.1 billion to prevent the crisis from worsening. The containment efforts are severely hampered by regional insecurity, mass population displacement, and attacks on medical personnel and facilities. In North Kivu, mortality rates in new zones like Biena and Manguredjipa have reached nearly 69%, significantly higher than the national average of 48%.
