Democratic Republic of the Congo Ebola outbreak: WHO sends vaccines as cases may be underestimated
The World Health Organization (WHO) has announced the distribution of 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine to the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) to combat the Ebola virus. Of these, 20,000 doses are allocated for a phase three clinical trial to evaluate the vaccine's impact against the Bundibugyo strain, while 50,000 doses are intended for frontline healthcare workers.
Simultaneously, the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC) warned that the current Ebola outbreak in eastern DRC may be significantly underestimated. Officials estimate that actual infection numbers could be three times higher than the official count of 5,208 confirmed cases, suggesting that only 30% to 40% of real infections are being detected.
The Africa CDC attributed this underreporting to the Bundibugyo strain, which presents milder symptoms than the Zaire variant, often leading to delayed medical attention. Consequently, approximately 97% of recent deaths have occurred within the community or in general health facilities lacking adequate isolation and infection prevention protocols.
