The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing its deadliest Ebola outbreak to date, driven by the rare Bundibugyo strain. As of late August 2026, health authorities have confirmed 5,375 cases and 2,557 deaths, representing a fatality rate of 47.6%. UN Ebola coordinator Julien Harneis warned that the epidemic is “growing exponentially,” spreading across an area larger than France and outpacing current response efforts.

The outbreak has significantly impacted healthcare workers, with approximately 160 infections and 43 deaths reported. Response efforts are hampered by insecurity, poor infrastructure, and funding shortages, with humanitarian organizations warning that current resources may only last a few weeks.

To bolster the response, the World Health Organization has approved the allocation of 70,000 doses of the Ervebo vaccine. While Ervebo is officially licensed for the Zaire strain, early data suggests potential cross-protection against the Bundibugyo strain. The allocation includes 20,000 doses for a Phase 3 clinical trial to assess efficacy against this specific strain and 50,000 doses intended for frontline and healthcare workers.
