Joseph Kabila joins FRN politico-military coalition in DRC

Former President Joseph Kabila has officially joined the Front pour la Refondation de la Nation (FRN), a new politico-military coalition in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The FRN, announced in Goma, replaces the previous alliance between the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC) and the March 23 Movement (M23). The coalition aims to challenge the administration of President Felix Tshisekedi, accusing him of tyranny and calling for resistance through all means, including force.

The Congolese government has responded by accusing Kabila of preparing a large-scale offensive against the state. Meanwhile, political leaders and provincial deputy caucuses have expressed strong opposition to the FRN, with some describing Kabila’s leadership of the group as a “declaration of war” against the nation’s sovereignty. The PALU party has urged Kabila to renounce armed struggle to avoid further national fragmentation.

International reactions include calls from Belgian MEPs for the European Union to impose sanctions on actors contributing to the instability. At the United Nations, the DRC has demanded the full implementation of resolution 2773, calling for the cessation of external support for rebel groups and the withdrawal of Rwandan forces from Congolese territory.
