Joseph Kabila launches FRN politico-military movement in DRC

Former Democratic Republic of the Congo President Joseph Kabila has launched a new politico-military coalition called the Front pour la refondation de la nation (FRN). Announced in Goma, the movement aims to restore the republic and end the current administration's rule, stating it will use 'all means necessary, including the use of force.'

The FRN is set to replace the AFC-M23 alliance, integrating key rebel leaders into its leadership. Kabila will serve as president, with Corneille Nangaa, Bertrand Bisimwa, Freddy Kaniki, and Sultani Makenga acting as vice-presidents. This move follows a period of intense political tension and Kabila's recent public criticisms of President Félix Tshisekedi, whom he accused of governing like 'Ivan the Terrible' and fostering tribalism and corruption.

The announcement comes amid significant legal and security challenges. Kabila was previously sentenced to death in absentia by a Congolese military court for treason and complicity with armed rebellions, charges he denies. The formation of the FRN represents a major escalation in the country's internal conflict and poses a direct challenge to the legitimacy and security of the Tshisekedi government.
