Democratic Republic of the Congo faces security crisis and calls for national dialogue

The Democratic Republic of the Congo is facing a severe security crisis in its eastern regions, particularly in Grand Kivu. This instability is driven by the March 23 Movement (M23) conflict and involves allegations of Rwandan involvement. The ongoing violence has created a criminal ecosystem where various actors, including state forces, foreign militaries, private military companies, and militias like the Wazalendo, exploit the instability for economic gain through resource capture, taxation, and territorial control.

In response to the persistent insecurity and threats to national sovereignty, President Félix Tshisekedi has proposed a national dialogue. This forum aims to examine the root causes of the conflict and establish a framework for restoring peace and state authority. A key innovation in this proposed process is the direct consultation of the population to create a foundational reference for discussions, seeking to avoid the failures of previous political dialogues.
