Demokritos Research Centre opens new high-tech facility in Greece

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inaugurated the new building of the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at the Demokritos National Centre for Scientific Research. The facility, built with an 8.5 million euro budget funded by the European Investment Bank and the Public Investment Program, serves as a research hub for artificial intelligence, next-generation networks, and cybersecurity. It also houses the Demokritos data center and the offices of the Greek AI company Pharos S.A.

During the ceremony, Mitsotakis emphasized that Greece is shifting from importing foreign technological solutions to developing and exporting domestic expertise. He highlighted that investing in knowledge production, data utilization, and computing power is essential for the country's strategic importance in a changing geopolitical landscape.

Additionally, Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos announced the creation of an eighth institute at Demokritos dedicated to Research Integrity, Security, and Ethics. This interdisciplinary institute aims to develop tools and policies for responsible AI and cybersecurity. This follows a recent announcement regarding a seventh institute focused on microelectronics, micromechanics, and microsystems.
