Expansion of NCSR Demokritos research infrastructure

Overview

The Greek government is expanding the research capabilities of the National Centre for Scientific Research (NCSR) Demokritos through new specialized institutes and infrastructure.

In late September 2026, Development Minister Takis Theodorikakos announced the creation of the Institute of Microtechnology, Microelectronics, and Microsystems. This seventh institute is intended to bolster national expertise in semiconductors, integrated photonics, and microelectronics to support strategic autonomy in sectors such as artificial intelligence and telecommunications. To support these goals, the government allocated 3.7 million euros to the Greek Semiconductor Capability Center.

By mid-October 2026, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis inaugurated a new smart building for the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications at Demokritos. Funded by the European Investment Bank and the Public Investment Program with an 8.5 million euro budget, this facility serves as a testbed for intelligent building technologies and hosts research in cybersecurity, next-generation networks, and artificial intelligence. The building houses the center’s central data center, which serves all Demokritos institutes and companies within the Leofkos technology park, and includes a node of the National Technological Infrastructure Network (GRNET) for high-speed connections to the DAIDALOS supercomputer. It also serves as the headquarters for Pharos A.E., a Greek artificial intelligence factory.

During the inauguration, Mitsotakis stated that Greece is shifting from importing foreign technological solutions to developing and exporting domestic expertise, noting that investing in knowledge production and computing power is essential for the country’s strategic importance. Additionally, Theodorikakos announced an eighth institute dedicated to Research Integrity, Security, and Ethics to develop tools for responsible AI and cybersecurity.
