Dengue cases surge in Panama and Sri Lanka

Panama's Ministry of Health reported 3,345 dengue infections through week 24 of 2026, including 20 severe cases and 10 deaths. Hospitalizations total 425, down from 550 the previous year. The highest incidence was in the Metropolitan region (824 cases) and among children aged 10‑14, with a rate of 106.6 per 100,000. Health officials urged continued vector‑control operations and community participation to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

Sri Lanka recorded more than 21,500 dengue cases in June 2026, straining hospitals across the island. The surge reflects seasonal monsoon conditions that favor mosquito breeding. Authorities are intensifying public‑awareness campaigns, urging residents to remove stagnant water, use repellents, and seek prompt medical care for symptoms such as high fever and severe headache. Severe dengue, including haemorrhagic fever, remains a concern if treatment is delayed.
