Sri Lanka dengue surge: cases exceed 94k, 72 deaths

Overview

Sri Lanka’s 2026 dengue outbreak has intensified, with confirmed infections surpassing 94,000 and the death toll rising to 72 by late August. The epidemic saw significant escalations in mid-year, with June and July recording approximately 21,533 and 29,962 cases respectively.

The Western Province remains the epicenter, accounting for over 52% of all infections. Within this province, Gampaha and Colombo districts are the most heavily impacted, together contributing nearly 40% of the national total. Other high-burden areas include Kandy, Matara, and Kalutara. Health officials have identified the DENV-2 strain as a primary driver, noting it accounts for approximately 75% of cases and is linked to more severe illness. NDCU Director Kapila Kannangara has warned that immunity to one of the virus’s four strains does not protect against others, and reinfection can lead to more serious illness.

The mounting caseload is placing immense strain on the healthcare system, forcing hospitals to convert wards and extend staff working hours. In response, the government has deployed military personnel and air force drones to scan neighborhoods, rooftops, and construction sites for stagnant water. Military and police officers are also conducting ground-level inspections of homes and schools.

International support has emerged, with the U.S. Embassy in Sri Lanka announcing a new ‘Public Health Pest Control and Vector-Borne Disease Response’ program in partnership with the Ministry of Health to assist in managing the crisis. Health authorities have noted that the ongoing monsoon season is creating ideal breeding conditions for the Aedes aegypti mosquito.
