Sri Lanka dengue surge: 81k cases, US aid, local drive

Overview

Sri Lanka’s 2026 dengue outbreak has deepened, with confirmed infections now at 81,511 and deaths unchanged at 61. The virulent DENV‑2 strain dominates transmission, and monsoon‑driven rains continue to sustain mosquito breeding. A quarter of cases occurred in July, and officials warn of a possible resurgence when the rainy season returns in November.

From 27 July to 31 July the National Dengue Control Unit, the Ministry of Health and the Clean Sri Lanka programme ran an island‑wide mosquito‑control campaign, including daily fogging in high‑risk districts such as Gampaha (21.7 % of infections). Armed‑forces drones and ground teams surveyed rooftops, schools and construction sites, targeting stagnant water with aerial insecticide spraying and household inspections.

In late July the U.S. Embassy inaugurated a Public Health Pest Control and Vector‑Borne Disease Response programme, funded through the DoD’s Overseas Humanitarian, Disaster, and Civic Aid program. Experts from U.S. Army Pacific and the 18th Theater Medical Command are providing technical assistance in preventive medicine, disease surveillance, entomology and integrated vector management.

Hospitals have added beds and extended operating hours, yet wards remain crowded. No dengue vaccine is in use and health services are still recovering from Cyclone Ditwah.

On 25 July a special dengue‑eradication campaign was launched in the Eastern Province under the theme “Dengue‑free East – Towards a Safe Society”. The initiative, organized by the youth wing of the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress and inaugurated by former parliamentarian Hon. M.I.M. Mansoor and party leader MP Hon. Ravu Hakeem, seeks to eradicate dengue, improve public health and raise community awareness. Several MPs attended, signalling broad political support for the provincial drive.

The multi‑layered response now combines national vector‑control operations, U.S. technical assistance and locally led eradication efforts as the country strives to curb the outbreak.
