Dengue Cases Surge in Spain and Florida, 2026

Spain’s health alert system recorded 253 imported cases of mosquito‑borne diseases up to the end of epidemiological week 31 in 2026. The tally includes 137 dengue infections, 113 chikungunya cases and three Zika cases. Chikungunya notifications rose sharply from 39 the previous year to 113, with most exposures linked to travel to Bolivia and Cuba. Dengue cases were primarily associated with travel to the Maldives.

In the United States, Florida’s Department of Health confirmed three locally transmitted dengue infections, the first such cases on the continental U.S. this year. The infections indicate that the Aedes aegypti mosquito is now circulating the virus within the state. Nationwide, the CDC reported 1,443 dengue cases in the U.S. through 28 July, the majority imported, with Cuba identified as the leading source of imported infections.
