Dengue and chikungunya cases 2026

Overview

In late July 2026, Delhi’s municipal health authority reported 212 dengue, 62 malaria, and 14 chikungunya infections for the year, with no fatalities. The city’s case numbers were lower than the same period in 2025. Spain’s health alert system has seen a significant rise in imported mosquito-borne diseases. By the end of epidemiological week 31, Spain recorded 137 imported dengue infections, 113 chikungunya cases, and three Zika cases. The number of chikungunya notifications has risen sharply compared to the previous year. As of August 16, Spain reported 119 chikungunya cases, nearly tripling the 42 cases recorded during the same period in 2025. Most cases are linked to travel to Bolivia and Cuba, the latter of which has faced a major epidemiological crisis. The most affected Spanish regions include Catalonia, the Valencian Community, and Madrid. Authorities continue to warn that the invasive tiger mosquito, Aedes albopictus, widespread along the Mediterranean coast, could enable local transmission of dengue, chikungunya, Zika, or yellow fever as temperatures rise. In the United States, Florida’s Department of Health confirmed three locally transmitted dengue infections—the first such cases on the continental U.S. this year—signalling active Aedes aegypti transmission. The CDC recorded 1,443 dengue cases nationwide through 28 July, the majority imported, with Cuba identified as the leading source. In Mexico, health authorities are monitoring rising trends as Quintana Roo reported 196 dengue infections, tripling the amount from the same period in 2025. The state also recorded its first chikungunya cases in years. While Chiapas has seen a 57% decrease in dengue, Acapulco is facing a more aggressive serotype 02 variant. Mexican officials have launched a national campaign to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
