Dengue fever cases confirmed in Tuscany and Ferrara

Health authorities in Italy have confirmed cases of Dengue fever in the regions of Tuscany and Ferrara. In Tuscany, a man approximately 40 years old was diagnosed after returning from a work trip to Central Africa. He presented with fever, headache, and joint pain but was discharged in good condition after being deemed a low risk for direct contagion.

In the province of Ferrara, the first case of the 2026 season was confirmed after a patient returned from abroad. The individual was hospitalized in the infectious diseases department at Cona Hospital, with diagnostic confirmation provided by the regional microbiological emergency reference center at Policlinico Sant'Orsola in Bologna.

In response to these cases, local health agencies have activated extraordinary disinfection protocols. These measures include adulticide treatments in public areas, larvicidal treatments in public drains, and door-to-door interventions in private areas to reduce mosquito density. Authorities emphasized that the virus is not transmitted directly from person to person but requires an infected mosquito, such as the Aedes species, to spread.
