Surge in West Nile and Dengue cases in Italy

Overview

Health authorities in Italy continue to manage a surge in mosquito-borne illnesses, specifically West Nile and Dengue viruses. As of early September 2026, the Italian National Institute of Health (ISS) reported 265 Dengue cases, including 24 autochthonous cases. West Nile virus infections reached 594 confirmed cases, including 306 neuroinvasive forms, with 41 deaths reported.

In response to Dengue reports, extraordinary mosquito control measures have been implemented across several regions. In Lissone, disinfestation targeting both adult mosquitoes and larvae began on September 19. In Lido di Camaiore, a confirmed Dengue case in a tourist prompted emergency nighttime disinfestation on September 22. In Reggio Emilia, the Azienda USL IRCCS activated an extraordinary disinfection protocol following a diagnosis in a resident who recently returned from an endemic area.

Regarding West Nile virus, the province of Brindisi activated a prevention plan, and in Pescara, the ASL reported a new autochthonous case in a 93-year-old resident. In Penne, a confirmed case in the via Guido Rossa neighborhood led to extraordinary disinfestation. Mayor Gilberto Petrucci noted that this case serves as an “important epidemiological indicator of potential viral circulation in the area,” particularly following a recent case in Pianella.

By early October, mosquito control efforts expanded following new Dengue reports. In Pramaggiore, the ULSS4 Veneto Orientale confirmed an imported case, prompting adulticide and larvicide treatments between October 7 and October 9 near the resident’s home. In Vicopisano, authorities issued an ordinance to target larvae and adults in the Campomaggio area following a reported case contracted abroad. Local officials noted that while the risk of transmission is remote, door-to-door inspections will be conducted to eliminate breeding sites.
