Bangladesh dengue cases surge as deaths reach 271

Dengue fever cases and fatalities are rising sharply in Bangladesh. In a 24-hour period ending Monday morning, nine people died and 1,902 new patients were hospitalized. This brings the total death toll for the year to 271, with 88,360 total hospitalizations recorded since January 1.

Medical experts have noted a shift in the disease's typical presentation. Many patients are no longer exhibiting classic warning signs, such as high fever or rashes, leading some to mistake the illness for a common cold. This lack of obvious symptoms has resulted in sudden clinical deterioration and shock, contributing to the rising mortality rate.

In Dhaka, 432 new patients were admitted in the last 24 hours, with 1,317 currently receiving treatment in the capital's hospitals. The surge in cases has placed significant pressure on medical facilities, with some hospitals reporting a need to treat patients on floors due to bed shortages.
