Tamil Nadu faces dengue surge amid monsoon onset

Tamil Nadu is experiencing a surge in dengue fever cases, coinciding with the onset of the monsoon. As of mid-September, the state has recorded over 16,500 cases and nine deaths. Chennai remains the most heavily affected district, with over 650 cases reported in September alone.

In response, the state government has deployed more than 25,000 mosquito-control workers across Tamil Nadu to conduct surveillance and eliminate breeding sites. In Chennai, the Greater Chennai Corporation has mobilized 3,597 workers to inspect households, educational institutions, and commercial spaces. Authorities are utilizing larvicidal solutions and conducting regular fogging operations to control mosquito populations. The corporation has also begun levying fines on commercial establishments found with active breeding grounds.

Health officials have also established dedicated fever wards in government hospitals, including the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital and Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, to manage the influx of patients.
