Dengue outbreaks reported in Ecuador and Panama

Health authorities in Ecuador and Panama are reporting significant dengue activity. In the Cotopaxi subtropics of Ecuador, 933 cases have been recorded up to epidemiological week 37. The canton of La Maná accounts for 72.9% of these cases, followed by Pangua. Among the total, 63 patients presented warning signs and three cases were classified as severe. Two deaths have been confirmed so far this year. Health officials are preparing for potential increases in tropical diseases due to El Niño conditions, implementing georeferencing to target mosquito breeding sites for fumigation and larvicide application.

In Panama, the Ministry of Health (MINSA) confirmed the death of a 39-year-old man in the Arraiján district. Currently, 18 patients remain hospitalized in the province of Panamá Oeste. Significant increases in infections have been noted in Burunga, Arraiján, Puerto Caimito, and Playa Leona. Nationally, Panama has recorded 7,565 cumulative cases of dengue as of epidemiological week 34, which includes 43 cases classified as severe. While these figures represent a 30.9% decrease compared to the same period in 2025, local authorities are urging the public to eliminate mosquito breeding sites.
