Regional measles, pertussis & dengue outbreaks continue

Overview

Honduras’ pertussis epidemic has accelerated, with confirmed cases climbing to about 190 by mid‑2026 and infant deaths rising to 15. Health officials have repeatedly urged vaccination of pregnant women and timely infant immunisation, while also warning that traditional practices such as “rociado y purga” are contributing to newborn fatalities.

Measles activity in Honduras has shifted from imported cases to sustained local transmission. Sixteen cases were recorded by early July, including a six‑month‑old infant and a family cluster in San Pedro Sula’s Cofradía neighbourhood. Emergency “dose‑zero” campaigns for infants, expanded national vaccination drives, and active case‑finding have been deployed, while cross‑border risk from Guatemala remains a concern. In Mexico, measles outbreaks persist, prompting authorities in Fresnillo, Zacatecas, to reactivate vaccination sessions in community centers to ensure children and adults are immunized before schools reopen.

Dengue transmission has intensified across Honduras, with 5,064 reported infections and three deaths. Regionally, Peru is facing significant surges. In the Piura region, cases reached 7,663 by mid-August, a figure nearly seven times higher than the total accumulated during 2025. This outbreak has resulted in four deaths, with Morropón province recording the highest infection count. Authorities have initiated school-based vaccinations and increased mosquito control efforts.

In Lambayeque, the dengue death toll has risen to 11 following the deaths of a mother and her 20-year-old son. Health officials noted the victims did not seek timely medical attention, opting for pharmacy medication instead. The son’s case was also complicated by leptospirosis, which medical officials are investigating in the mother. Lambayeque has reported 3,676 confirmed cases, prompting urgent warnings against self-medication.
