Denis Lyamin Unmanned Systems Forces Russian drone forces military logistics reshuffle Ukraine war

President Vladimir Putin announced a major reshuffle of the Russian armed forces, naming Lieutenant General Denis Lyamin as commander of the newly created Unmanned Systems Forces, a branch dedicated to drone warfare. Lyamin, previously chief of staff of the Centre group fighting in Ukraine, was described by Putin as “one of the most qualified specialists” for the role.

At the same meeting, the head of the Centre group, Valery Solodchuk, was reassigned to head all military logistics, with Andrei Ivanayev – formerly commander of the Eastern group – taking over Solodchuk’s former post. The changes were presented as a “refinement” of the military structure midway through the fifth year of the war in Ukraine.

Drones now dominate the conflict, deployed along a 1,200‑km front, at sea and against deep‑behind targets such as energy infrastructure and warehouses. Ukraine has responded by creating its own long‑range impact command.
