Russian military leadership reshuffle
Entities: Vladimir Putin · Valery Solodchuk · Andrei Ivanayev · Russian Ministry of Defense · Piotr Bolgarev
Overview
In early August 2026 President Vladimir Putin announced a major restructuring of Russia’s armed forces engaged in the war in Ukraine. A new Unmanned Systems Forces branch dedicated to drone warfare was created, with Lieutenant General Denis Lyamin appointed its commander. At the same time senior commanders were reassigned: Valery Solodchuk, previously head of the Centre grouping, was moved to lead the Joint Logistics Service, while Colonel Andrei Ivanayev took over the Centre group and Colonel Piotr Bolgarev was named commander of the Eastern (Vostok) grouping.
The reshuffle was presented as a refinement of the military structure amid a slowing offensive in the Donbas region, a shift toward greater reliance on drones, and reports of high Russian casualties and a possible new mobilization later in the year.
