Denmark approves new work permit scheme for 16 non-EU countries

The Danish Parliament has passed a new law (L 163) establishing a specialized work permit scheme for citizens of 16 non-EU countries. Set to take effect on January 1, 2027, the program aims to facilitate easier employment for qualified workers from selected nations.

The list of eligible countries includes the United States, United Kingdom, Singapore, China (including Hong Kong), Japan, Australia, Canada, India, Brazil, Malaysia, Montenegro, Serbia, North Macedonia, Albania, Ukraine, and Moldova. Selection was based on investment weight, EU candidacy status, or bilateral mobility agreements.

To utilize this scheme, companies must be certified by the Danish Agency for International Recruitment and Integration (SIRI), be covered by a collective agreement, and employ at least ten full-time staff in Denmark. The scheme is subject to labor market conditions, specifically that the seasonally adjusted gross unemployment rate does not exceed 3.75 percent.

Eligible employees must hold full-time positions with a minimum annual salary of approximately 43,080 euros (based on 2026 reference rates). Once biometric data is registered, beneficiaries may begin working quickly, with permits issued for three years and renewable for up to four-year periods.
