Denmark considers new pneumococcal vaccine for adults

Efforts are underway in Denmark to implement a new, cost-free vaccine for adults and seniors to protect against pneumococcal bacteria. These bacteria are responsible for a wide range of infections, including pneumonia, meningitis, and sepsis, contributing to approximately 30,000 annual hospitalizations for pneumonia in the country.

Ole Hilberg, a professor of lung diseases at Sygehus Lillebælt, has noted the significant potential of this vaccine to prevent deaths and reduce hospital admissions, which would also provide economic relief to the healthcare system. The initiative has been presented to the Vaccination Council, and a final decision regarding the implementation of free vaccinations for vulnerable groups is currently awaited.
