Overview

Denmark has launched its seasonal influenza and COVID-19 vaccination campaign, coordinated by the Danish Health Authority and the Statens Serum Institut. Starting in early September, approximately 1.3 million citizens aged 65 and older began receiving automatic invitations via Digital Post or physical mail. While seniors receive automatic notifications, other high-risk individuals—such as those with chronic heart or lung diseases, severely weakened immune systems, or a BMI over 35—must book their own appointments to access the free program.

In addition to the seasonal respiratory campaign, the industry organization Lif continues to advocate for the government to accelerate assessments for new vaccines, including those for RS-virus and shingles. Efforts are also focused on implementing a cost-free pneumococcal vaccine for adults and seniors. Medical experts, including lung disease professor Ole Hilberg, have highlighted the vaccine’s potential to reduce the approximately 30,000 annual hospitalizations for pneumonia in Denmark, thereby providing economic relief to the healthcare system. A final decision from the Vaccination Council regarding free vaccinations for vulnerable groups is still pending.

Other aspects of the national program include free MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella) vaccinations for adults aged 18 and older who lack immunity. The current seasonal window for influenza and COVID-19 vaccinations is scheduled to run until December 20.
