Denmark electric micromobility safety concerns rise
Data from the Accident Analysis Group at Odense University Hospital reveals a significant safety issue regarding electric scooters in Denmark. Between January 2022 and June 2025, 422 people were treated for injuries related to electric scooter accidents. Despite helmet laws being in effect since January 2022, approximately 46 percent of those injured were not wearing helmets.
The risk is particularly high among young adults; nearly 80 percent of injured individuals aged 18 to 24 were riding without helmets. In contrast, only 30 percent of injured 10 to 14-year-olds were without head protection. Insurance provider If notes that helmet use can reduce the risk of serious head injuries by approximately 60 percent.
Local officials, including Kolding Municipal Council member Niels Henning Bladt, have expressed concerns over rising issues with electric vehicles. Residents have called for stricter measures, such as mandatory helmets and driver's licenses for electric bicycles and scooters, to address hazardous riding behavior and underage usage.
