Denmark electric scooter safety debate

Overview

Public and medical discourse regarding electric scooter safety has intensified in Denmark. A survey by Epinion for DR found that 44 percent of respondents support a total ban on electric scooters in traffic, driven by concerns that accident risks are eight to nine times higher than those for traditional bicycles. The Danish Transport Agency has initiated an investigation into regulations, though results are not expected until early 2027.

Medical data from Odense University Hospital highlights significant injury trends, noting that 422 people were treated for electric scooter-related injuries between January 2022 and June 2025. Despite existing helmet laws, approximately 46 percent of those injured were not wearing helmets, with the non-compliance rate reaching nearly 80 percent among young adults aged 18 to 24. In response to these safety concerns and hazardous riding behavior, local officials and residents have called for stricter measures, including mandatory helmets and driver’s licenses for electric micromobility users.
