Denmark electricity prices fluctuate with low midday rates and evening peaks
Electricity prices in Denmark are experiencing significant fluctuations, with extreme differences between daytime and evening rates. On Monday, spot prices in West Denmark (DK1) dropped to as low as 2 øre per kWh between 11:00 and 15:00, driven by solar energy production. However, prices are expected to peak significantly in the evening, reaching up to 2.25 kr/kWh around 20:00.
Norlys notes that while evening spikes can reach high levels, such as 4.5–4.6 kr/kWh, these instances remain rare. The company emphasizes that over the past year, there have been hundreds of hours with negative electricity prices, compared to only a handful of hours exceeding 3.5 kr/kWh.
Energy experts suggest that consumers with variable contracts can save money by shifting high-consumption tasks, such as running dishwashers, washing machines, or charging electric vehicles, to the midday hours when prices are lowest.
