Denmark EV trends show rural growth and potential tax shifts
Electric vehicle (EV) adoption in Denmark is shifting geographically. According to a new analysis by Mobility Denmark, EVs are no longer primarily a metropolitan phenomenon. For the first time, rural municipalities have slightly more EVs per inhabitant than capital municipalities. The number of EVs per 1,000 inhabitants in rural areas has risen from 10.7 in 2022 to 104.9, nearly a tenfold increase. Provincial cities currently lead with 129.1 EVs per 1,000 inhabitants.
Simultaneously, proposed changes to registration tax frameworks may impact EV pricing. A government proposal aims to lower the threshold for tax exemption on new electric vehicles. Currently, cars priced under 419,300 DKK are exempt, but the proposal suggests lowering this limit to 366,200 DKK. Calculations by the driver's organization FDM indicate that while many popular models will remain exempt, some vehicles, including certain Tesla and Volkswagen models, could become tens of thousands of kroner more expensive due to these new taxes.
