Denmark evaluates citizenship screening for anti-democratic values
Denmark is considering new methods to screen citizenship applicants for ‘anti-democratic’ attitudes. An expert group has been tasked with defining which values and opinions should trigger a rejection, a move supported by the Social Democrats and center-right parties to ensure applicants align with Danish values.
In recent years, politicians have questioned whether objective criteria alone are sufficient for granting citizenship. While some applicants in 2024 were granted citizenship despite social media posts deemed inconsistent with Danish values, a 2025 applicant was denied based on concerns regarding their beliefs.
Critics argue that this shift toward ideological vetting threatens the rule of law and freedom of thought. They suggest that allowing politicians to arbitrarily judge personal opinions could lead to an authoritarian society where democratic rights are contingent upon political conformity. A recent survey indicated that 74 percent of Danes agree that citizenship applicants should be assessed on their views in addition to formal requirements.
