Denmark immigration and citizenship policy changes
Overview
The Danish government has proposed tightening requirements for citizenship and refugee protection. Immigration and Integration Minister Morten Bødskov stated that citizenship should be reserved for those loyal to Denmark and its values, specifically excluding those who support terrorism or oppose rights such as those of the LGBTQ+ community.
As part of this policy shift, an expert group is tasked with defining ‘anti-democratic’ attitudes that would trigger a rejection of citizenship applications. This move is supported by the Social Democrats and center-right parties. While a survey indicated that 74 percent of Danes agree applicants should be assessed on their views, critics argue that ideological vetting threatens the rule of law and could lead to a society where democratic rights are contingent upon political conformity.
Recent developments show the practical application of these concerns. While some applicants in 2024 were granted citizenship despite social media posts deemed inconsistent with Danish values, a 2025 applicant was denied based on concerns regarding their beliefs. Critics maintain that allowing politicians to judge personal opinions could lead to an authoritarian society.
Additionally, Denmark is moving to restrict temporary protection for Ukrainian refugees. Following models used by Norway and Switzerland, the government has identified fourteen regions in western and central Ukraine, excluding Kyiv, as relatively safe. Refugees arriving from these designated areas will no longer be eligible for automatic temporary protection, which grants the right to live and work legally in the country.
