Denmark expands battery storage to stabilize energy grid

Denmark is expanding its battery storage capabilities to stabilize the electrical grid and manage renewable energy fluctuations. In Vejle Municipality, a new 60-megawatt battery facility has been inaugurated at the Vandel III Solar Park. As the most powerful battery plant in the Nordic region connected directly to a solar park, it aims to store excess solar energy produced during peak sunlight and release it during periods of high demand, potentially lowering electricity prices for consumers.

Simultaneously, Energinet is investigating battery solutions to address capacity shortages in the electricity grid on the island of Bornholm. A proposal by EWII for a large-scale battery at Hasle is being considered as a way to mitigate grid strain. Such capacity issues currently limit the ability of local businesses to expand due to high electricity consumption requirements. Batteries could serve to store power during low-load periods and supply it when demand peaks, reducing the overall burden on the existing infrastructure.
