European battery storage and grid stability
Overview
European regions are utilizing battery storage to manage renewable energy integration, though the scale and impact of these systems vary.
In Hamburg, Germany, battery storage units have increased sevenfold since 2022, reaching nearly 17,800 units. However, 97 percent of these are small-scale systems under 20 kilowatt-hours, which Axel Schröder of Hamburger Energienetze GmbH noted offer “no significant benefit to grid stability.” Current large-scale operators focus on price fluctuations at the Leipzig Electricity Exchange rather than transmission grid management.
In contrast, Denmark is implementing larger-scale solutions to stabilize its grid. A new 60-megawatt facility at the Vandel III Solar Park in Vejle Municipality serves as a major Nordic plant designed to store excess solar energy. Additionally, Energinet is exploring battery proposals, such as a large-scale project at Hasle, to address capacity shortages on the island of Bornholm that currently limit local business expansion.

Hamburg has seen a sevenfold increase in battery storage units since 2022, but most are too small to contribute to grid stability, and large-scale operators focus on market prices rather than grid fluctuations.
