Denmark raises social housing cost limits in high-price areas

The Danish government is increasing the maximum expenditure limit for social housing construction in high-priced areas by an additional 10 percent. This move, announced by the Ministry of Children, Seniors and Housing, aims to facilitate the development of affordable housing in regions where high land and construction costs have previously made projects economically unviable.

This new 10 percent increase follows a previous 10 percent rise implemented earlier this year. When combined with a pending legislative proposal that allows municipalities to approve projects up to 10 percent over the limit through municipal supplementary loans, the total allowable construction budget could be up to 30 percent higher than it was at the start of the year.

The measures are expected to take effect in September and will specifically impact high-cost areas, including Copenhagen, Frederiksberg, Aarhus, and 15 other municipalities in the capital region. Minister Jacob Mark stated that the initiative is intended to ensure that ordinary citizens, including families, young people, and the elderly, can afford to live in diverse urban environments.
