Denmark housing affordability and policy

Denmark is addressing housing affordability through both government policy and private family support.

The Danish government has increased the maximum expenditure limit for social housing construction in high-priced areas, such as Copenhagen and Aarhus, by 10 percent. This follows a previous increase earlier in the year, potentially allowing total construction budgets to reach 30 percent above previous levels when combined with municipal supplementary loans. The Ministry of Children, Seniors and Housing stated the initiative aims to ensure families, young people, and the elderly can afford to live in diverse urban environments.

Simultaneously, economic pressures on the housing market are influencing private financial decisions. A YouGov survey indicates that nearly half of Danish parents are considering providing financial assistance to their children for housing. This support includes helping with upfront costs like deposits, assisting with monthly rent, or engaging in ‘parental purchase’ (forældrekøb) of cooperative or owner-occupied housing to help students and young people enter the market.
