Denmark reaches 700,000 electric vehicle milestone
Denmark has reached a milestone of 700,000 electric vehicles (EVs) on its roads, according to recent data. This growth has contributed to a significant drop in average CO2 emissions from new passenger cars, falling from 117 grams per kilometer in 2020 to 26 grams in 2026.
Mobility Denmark is urging the government to permanently abolish registration taxes on EVs to maintain this momentum. The organization warns that proposed tax increases could make electric cars more expensive and hinder the green transition.
Simultaneously, rising fuel prices, driven by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, are pushing more consumers toward electric mobility. In 2026, EVs accounted for 81 percent of newly registered passenger cars in Denmark, a significant increase compared to the previous year. The commercial sector is also seeing a shift, with electric vans representing 42 percent of new registrations.
